Thirteen-year-old Tommy Batchelor has joined the rotation in the title role of Billy Elliot at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. Batchelor joins original Billys David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, who will continue performing in the hit musical.
A native of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Batchelor began his dance training at age four at the Dance Factory in Minnesota, and by age 12 was dancing in the final rounds of the international ballet competition YAGP Youth America Grand Prix. Before joining the rotation as Billy, he was an understudy for the role.
According to a production spokesperson, Batchelor will not be considered for a Best Actor Tony Award nomination, since he was not performing the role on opening night. On February 12, the Tony Awards Administration Committee issued a ruling that Alvarez, Kowalik and Kulish would be considered jointly in the Leading Actor in a Musical category for their performances in Billy Elliot.
